Abstract:
This feature class contains polygon data covering prescribed fire data by town for the state of New Hampshire for the years 2014 and 2015. Data includes who (state agencies, private landowners, etc.) conducted prescribed burns, in which town municipal burns were conducted, and the primary fuels and objectives of the burns. Data were derived from a comprehensive survey of town fire wardens, state and federal agencies, burn permit records, and private landowners/organizations.
Purpose:
The data provides baseline spatial prescribed fire information for the state of New Hampshire. This information can be used to analyze long-term prescribed fire trends; improve air quality emissions modeling; and inform state prescribed fire policy.

This is a partial dataset. Data represents 90% of NH municipal fire departments and/or fire wardens. Unincorporated territories were not included in the Extent of Prescribed Fire in NH report. Unincorporated territories are included within the shapefile, however, data for these areas are listed as 'NA.'Data was collected at the municipal level. Use and analysis of geographic data are limited by the scale at which the data are collected and mapped, and by means of interpolation and other modeling procedures used in preparation of the data. The data were prepared with spatial models that used data at multiple scales and are time-limited. The user is advised of these complications.This dataset is provided 'as is.' The producer(s) of this dataset and contributors to this dataset do not make any warranties of any kind for this dataset, and are not liable for any loss or damage however and whenever caused by any use of this dataset. Prescribed fire users where grouped into four 'affiliations.' There are potential challenges assigning fires to a single 'affiliation' when multiple parties are involved.

Dataset is incomplete. Data represents 90% of municipalities, 100% of class IV burn permits (including private burns), and 100% of burns conducted by state and federal agencies. Unincorporated territories were not included in survey process.

The DLG-3 files for the 213 7.5-minute quadrangles in the state were converted to Arc/Info coverages using "DLGARC". Line topology was constructed, and attributes were appended using standard Arc/Info utilities. Each tile was then projected from UTM meters (Zone 18 or 19), NAD27, to NH State Plane feet, NAD83. The individual tiles were then edgematched, allowing for movement of arcs at the quadrangle seams of up to 10 ft. to create the statewide layer.
