Abstract:

GNIS contains point data derived from the federal Geographic Names Information System, depicting the locations of all named places in New Hampshire. Place name locations from the federal GNIS have been corrected and updated, based upon a variety of sources, including current and historic US Geological Survey topographic maps, aerial photography, New Hampshire state agency records, and current web sites.

Purpose:

This data set will provide a quick reference for anyone wishing to determine what features in New Hampshire have names. It will also aid those wishing to name an unnamed feature in New Hampshire, by indicating whether duplicate or similar names exist elsewhere in the state.

Original GNIS locations appeared to be derived from printed latitude/longitude pairs and contained numerous inaccuracies. All locations whose names appear on USGS quadrangles have been correctly located. Features such as churches, schools, and other structures are estimated to be 80% accurate.

Dataset copied from Geographic Names Information System web site. Tabular data contained latitude and longitude pairs for each feature. ArcInfo Generate command created an ArcInfo coverage, which was then converted, using ArcGIS 9.1, into geodatabase format. Features were displayed using USGS Digital Raster Graphics backdrop, and feature locations were adjusted to match the DRGS. Where the feature was not visible on the DRG, 2003 NAIP photography was used, along with information culled from historic USGS quadrangles dating back to 1900, and with current information from features' web sites. Upon completion of editing, dataset was projected into NH State Plane coordinates and converted to shapefile format.

Complex Systems Research Center acquired shapefile from NH Office of Energy and Planning. In comparing tabular data to spatial data, nine hundred and twenty-four tabular records were found to have missing spatial locations. These records were removed from the data, and the shapefile was provided back to NH Office of Energy and Planning.
