Description:
Abstract:
This data set contains 13 categories of land use data (polygons) for Rockingham County, New Hampshire. The primary data used to derive the layer were 1974 1:20,000-scale, black & white, digital orthophotos and 1998 land use data (<URL:http://www.granit.sr.unh.edu/cgi-bin/nhsearch?dset=lu98/lu98015>).
Purpose:
These photo-interpreted land use data are intended for use by state, regional, and municipal resource managers, planning agencies, and scientific researchers. The data are part of a larger effort, sponsored by the Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology (CICEET) at the University of New Hampshire, to analyze past and current development trends and their impact on water quality, and to model future development pressures in the region and their likely water quality impacts.
Supplemental_Information:
Data distribution tile: county

This data set was derived by modifying a 1998 land use data layer for Rockingham County. Standards governing the development of the 1998 data are available in LUSTANDARDS.doc.

A countywide mosaic of the 74 orthophotography - 74DOM015 - is available from GRANIT (<URL:http://www.granit.sr.unh.edu/cgi-bin/nhsearch?dset=dom74/74dom015>). A companion data file - PHOTOPNT74 - may also be downloaded from the web site (<URL:http://www.granit.sr.unh.eduj/cgi-bin/nhsearch?dset=photopnt/photopnt74>). This point layer documents the name, photo centerpoint, date of acquisition, and other pertinent information for each photo used to create the mosaic.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Data were digitized on-screen by GRANIT staff by photo-interpreting 1:20,000-scale DOQs of Rockingham County. Attribute coding was checked by on-screen overlay of the delineated land use polygons, displayed using transparent symbology, on the base data (e.g. the DOQs). This scrutiny detected any missing or erroneously labeled polygons. Data evaluation occurred at a scale no less than the smallest source photo scale of 1:20,000.

In addition, code domain checks ensured that only valid codes were assigned to features, and polygon "dissolve" operations identified any cases where adjacent polygons shared the same land use code.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Polygon and arc-node topology exists. Topology checks were used to identify and eliminate any sliver polygons, dangling nodes, and/or other potential errors.
Completeness_Report: All of Rockingham County was mapped and classified.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Data were generated primarily from photo interpretation of historic 1974 orthophotos (1:20,000-scale, black-and-white, 1-meter resolution, aerial photographs).

Source_Contribution: Provided the initial land use data set.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The 98LU was overlain on the 74DOQs, and updated to reflect the features visible in the imagery. Because there is significant tile overlap in the source photography, the sequence in which the photos are displayed impacts the visible features for any area on the ground. (A listing of the display order is provided in 74photoorder015.txt.)

Using the documented photo sequence, on-screen digitizing/editing was performed to:

- eliminate any land use features that were not present in 1974 - redelineate, as necessary, any features that had changed from the earlier date

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The land use feature delineations were checked by visually checking the symbolized features displayed over the source DOQs. Modifications were made, as warranted, during the quality control process - to correct incorrectly classed lands, and to fix digitizing errors such as overshoots and sliver polygons.
