Discontinous stratified-drift aquifers underlie 138 of the 1,629 square miles of the river basin. Saturated thickness of stratified drift is locally greater than 260 feet but generally is less than 100 feet. Transmissivity exceeds 4,000 feet squared per day in some aquifers but is generally less than 1,000 feet squared per day. Purpose: This data can be used for analysis, producing maps, and illustrations for hydrologic studies and resource management. Supplemental_Information: Aquifer boundaries were delineated for this study using available surficial geologic maps. Areal extent of stratified-drift aquifers was mapped by USGS personnel. Only aquifer boundaries (the contact between stratified drift and till-bedrock) are shown on the maps produced specifically for this study. The aquifer-boundary maps shown on plates 1-4 and this GIS data layer are simplified surficial geologic maps. These maps show the areal extent of the stratified-drift deposits that contain sufficient saturated permeable material to yield significant quantities of water to wells and springs. Aquifer boundaries delineated in the field or obtained from available sources were transferred from paper USGS topo maps, to Mylar copies. The lines representing aquifer boundaries were then digitized (RMS error not more than .004) and plotted on paper to check for accuracy. The coverages were transformed into the NH State Plane Coor- dinate system using NAD 83. All digitzed quadrangles were joined to- gether using the MAPJOIN command in ARC/INFO. The coverage exist as a line and polygon coverage. This coverage was used to create the paper published maps included with the USGS Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4318. The coverage was subdivided to create four plate section maps. A copy of this report can be obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey. Most of the aquifer boundaries on plates 1-4 in the published maps are shown as solid lines. The explanation provided on the plates sig- nifies solid lines as "approximately located", because the boundary locations have a horizontal accuracy of about + or - 80ft. Dashed lines are inferred, and dotted-lines are concealed, usually beneath swamps. Any use of trade, product, or firm names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government. Although this Federal Geographic Data Committee-compliant metadata file is intended to document the data set in nonproprietary form, as well as in ARC/INFO format, this metadata file may include some ARC/INFO-specific terminology. Related_Spatial_Data_Sets: Other data sets available from this study include, seismic lines, saturated thickness, transmissivity, and water table contours.
